Apple Willing to Fix My iPod

Wonderful news. Apple finally decided to fix (or replace) my iPod. It took three times sending it to them and three weeks without my iPod, but finally I am going to have a working iPod again!

Update 2008-10-24:
It appears that whatever they're doing, they're shipping it from Shanghai (China) which is the same place they shipped my original. Must be a new or refurbished one. I'm glad that I saved a copy of my hardware stats so I can compare the new one with the old one.

Update 2008-11-05:
Well, they sent me a new one (or refurbished, can't tell really). Sorry 'bout the lack of update, but I've been moving and been too busy and haven't gotten my Net moved yet.

iPod Touch Repair Request Attempt 3

iPod Touch - TinkerBell
The socket on my iPod where I plug my USB cord, wall charger and bluetooth adapter has intermittent functionality. I tested the iPod with 4 USB cords and 3 PCs which I know work with other iPods. I sent my iPod to you guys twice, but I am still experiencing this problem. I have updated my firmware and iTunes and have followed all recommended troubleshooting tips. I'd rather not go another week sans-iPod if not necessary. Please advise.
And that's what I sent them. I've got a limit of like 450 characters or something though it says on the form it's 250, I think, but I can't condense this to 250 characters. For up to an hour, I wait for someone to read it and probably send me back a semi-automated response saying that they approve my repairs and they'll send me a box to send them my iPod. At least in the mean time, I can put my music back on (careful to not touch the cord!) so I can listen to it till I get the box to ship it back to them. All this is very depressing.

EDIT: Yep, there it is:
Our initial diagnosis indicates that because your product replacement will likely be covered by the warranty, an AppleCare Protection Plan, or another Apple repair program, there should be no charge to you for the service performed. If we have questions or concerns regarding the repair coverage, we will notify you. ... Within two business days, you should receive a package at this address: ... The package will contain shipping materials and instructions for you to return the original product to Apple at this address:
They condensed my problem to this:
Problem Description: Accessories - Dock - Top Connector not func/damage
I am thinking that if the technicians only see that, then they might not realize the problem is intermittent sometimes. I am guessing that without that knowledge, they probably just push the iPod into some diagnosis dock, wait for an automated check pattern to run and send it back to me because it happens that the diagnosis dock sits at the right angle so that my iPod will happen to connect every time.

It could be a problem with the support system, not the individual technician. Bah! That doesn't make me feel any better about this. Though, it does make me curious how much it costs them to have a box shipped practically from coast to coast 6 times. I guess all that gets passed on to the customer. But maybe they save by having less for the techs to read, though that's offset slightly by the random frustrated customer who says, "Doesn't Microsoft have a product to compete with this yet?!"

Apple's Automated System Mocks Me

http://www.flobi.com/images/ipodtouch2.pngRemember my post last night: Flobi.com, The Blog: Apple Won't Fix My iPod Touch? Well, Apple (which is still in the process of returning my broken iPod for the second time claiming it's not broken) apparently has an automated process that has decided I needed another reminder that nothing is wrong with my iPod.
Dear Joshua,

Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.

Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD TOUCH and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality.

As a part of our assessment and test procedures, your product has had the latest software and firmware updates installed. It is now being returned to you, and you should expect to receive it within two business days along with a letter that provides details about our assessment as well as useful troubleshooting tips.

Shipping address:
[removed]

Repair ID: [you don't need this]

Your repair status is available online ["online" was a link].

Apple
It's just irritating that even though I can reproduce this on every computer that I bring it to...CAN reproduce it, ha! I'd love to be able to NOT reproduce it! What is wrong with their technicians? Are they lazy? Are they stupid? Are they just spiteful? I don't know, but it's very frustrating.

Apple Won't Fix My iPod Touch

iPod TouchI don't get it. I have always liked Apple. But for some reason, they won't fix my iPod Touch. I don't know what to do.

For the past month or so, I've had a rough time connecting my iPod to my computer. Granted, I can usually get it connected by wiggling the plug in and out of the socket on the iPod, but lately, it's also been having problems connecting to my dock and my wall charger.

I listen to my iPod a lot, so naturally, I procrastinated sending it to them because I will miss it. But, eventually, it just becomes too much for me and I do. So what do they say to my problem? "Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD TOUCH and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality."

Okay, now before I sent it in, I wanted to make sure it wasn't my computer or my cable. First, I tried cleaning out the plug and the socket. No change, so I tested this iPod with three different cables, three different computers and at least two different versions of iTunes. I also tested two of the cords and two of the computers with other iPods to make sure they were working fine. This is all before I sent it to them. But, somehow, they can't reproduce it. They send it back to me.

So, I test it some more. This is when I noticed my wall charger was giving similar problems (I don't normally use my wall charger as the iPod's usually charging at my desk at work all day). I tested with another cable and another computer, both of which have no problems with my co-worker's iPod. I tested with 3 different iPod firmwares (1.1.4, 1.2.0, 1.2.1), 3 different iTunes (7.5, 8.0, 8.1) and still, it has trouble connecting. In fact, after it came back from Apple I noticed the trouble was in fact getting worse. Everything I connect my iPod to has the same problem. Most of the time, I have to pull the cable slightly out of the socket and move it around till I find a good connection point. Same with my wall charger; same with my bluetooth adapter.

Now, the bluetooth adapter was really the camel's straw, because up to that point, I could tolerate wiggling my cord whenever I wanted to charge it and just make sure I didn't bump it so it wouldn't come unconnected. But when I'm walking, there is no way I can keep it from moving around. It's not like I'm running or even jogging. I'm talking about a little jostling, not a bunch of hard jolts over and over.

So, I send it to them again. This time, I include a thorough list of all I've done to diagnose this. In total, I've tested it with 4 cables, 3 computers, at least 4 versions of iTunes and 3 different firmware versions. I asked them to please not return it without fixing and explained how frustrating it was the last time.

But alas, a few minutes ago, I got the results. "Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD TOUCH and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality." Now, I come from a family of electronic and computer professionals. I can tell by my diagnosis that the soldering or connections to the socket circutry is coming loose. I'm half tempted to take the stupid thing apart myself and put it back together except that it would void my warranty. I've still got a year on my warranty, so I'm certainly not going to do that.

I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I'm going to test it on more computers. More cables. There's no point in testing with more firmware's or iTunes versions, only the most recent one really matters anyways. I feel like I'm going crazy. What in the world is going on?

Is having a loose connection socket really meeting "Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality?" Someone scream for me. There's nothing to do but keep sending it in till some competent repair technician gets his hands on it and says, "Oh, this one's broken just like he says it is," or, till my warranty runs out, after all, it's not really usable this way; my head is too far away from my pocket to use the included ear buds while I'm walking because the cable's not long enough.

I think next time, I'm going to record a video for them demonstrating the problem. At least then, they can see what's going on with their own eyes. Perhaps I'll post that up here and on youtube. I've always wanted to post something on youtube.

iPhone/iPod Touch Repository

Okay, I've started my own repository for iPhone/iPod Touch applications. I've added MultiPod (see a few posts ago). Anyone who has a Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch can add my repository by the normal means. The address is http://i.flobi.com and I named it that for ease of entry. (You're welcome.) If you go in a browser, I recommend Safari as it's designed for that browser specifically.

MultiPod

Here's a quick upload of my program MultiPod that I've been working on in spare time. This is my first and only iPod application. It makes it so that you can swap multiple music/video/pic/bookmark libraries so that you can sync with multiple computers or convince your computer you have multiple iPods (or both!). It also allows you to require a password to be entered when switching to a library for those who may have sensitive information in your media.

Note: It does not currently swap contacts, calendars or any other application data.

Installation:
First of all, you must have a Jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch (though this hasn't been tested on iPhone) with firmware 1.1.4. Reason for firmware requiment: paths changed. A version for 1.1.3 and lower could be made if requested.

Use the installer to install the Jiggy Runtime.

UPDATE: View this post to add my iPhone/iPod Touch Repository.  You will now find MultiPod under Utilities with SwapTunes and other similar programs.

When you run MultiPod, it will automatically detect the current configuration and assign it to the first position. To change the name of an entry, use iTunes; the entry will be named the same as the name iTunes gives the device.

iPhone Shuffle

Strange situations today have made it such that I can't listen to music normally, so I have my iPod plugged in instead of my brand new blue tooth headphones (they're awesome by the way). I've got an application I downloaded called "Shuffle" which is supposed to make the shuffle feature on my iPod more intuitive. I'm not sure how well it works, so I was looking up, "iPhone shuffle app" in Google to find a review (hint: iPhone and iPod Touch are almost identical devices).

But I came up with another application called iPhone Shuffle. Apparently, it dials a random US phone number...and that's all it does. I think it's hilarious, you?
